If you are a facilities manager, procurement officer, or project manager tasked with sourcing an industrial crane—specifically a Demag crawler crane or Demag overhead crane—this is for you.
This is not a sales pitch. This is a 4-step checklist I wish I had been given five years ago. I manage purchasing for a mid-sized fabrication plant, and in 2020, I had to oversee the acquisition of two major crane systems. I made mistakes. Unexpectedly big ones. This guide covers how to avoid the ones that cost real time and money.
This checklist assumes you already know you need a crane. We are skipping the question of "Do I need one?" and jumping straight to "How do I make sure the order is right the first time?"
Step 1: Define Your Lift Path, Not Just Your Load Weight
This sounds basic, but it is the most common point of failure. Everyone asks about the weight capacity, but weight is only half the equation. You need to define the full path of the lift.
Start by asking these three specific questions:
- What is the travel path? How far does the load need to move horizontally? Is it a straight line, or does it need to navigate around columns or other equipment?
- What are the vertical clearance constraints? Measure the lowest overhead obstacle, not just the hook height. A Demag overhead crane needs to fit between the floor and the bottom of your roof trusses, but also clear any ductwork or lights.
- What is the drop zone? Where exactly is the load being placed? Is it ground level, a truck bed, or a specific machine bed?
We were using the same words but meaning different things regarding ‘travel.‘ I said ’across the bay,’ and the engineer heard ’to the far side.’ Discovered this when the crane installed position meant it had a 3-foot overhang preventing it from reaching our final assembly table. (Note to self: always draw it out before the PO).

Before moving forward, confirm you have a dimensioned drawing of the lift path—not just the floor plan. This is your roadmap.
Step 2: The Undercarriage Spec—Don’t Be a “Bucket Hat” Thinker
When you search for "demag crawler crane" or "crewe tractor" (a common misdirection for crawler components), it is easy to fixate on the upper machinery. Don't. The undercarriage is where you save or lose your budget.
Most buyers (myself included, back in 2022) think: “Crawler crane = rough terrain. Rough terrain = big, chunky tracks.” That is a bucket hat level of generalization—it covers your head, but it doesn't protect you from the weather. It's an oversimplification that will bite you.
Here is the reality: A crawler crane undercarriage failure (track strain) can be a result of ground condition mismatches. You need to specify:
- Ground Bearing Pressure (GBP): What is the PSI your soil can handle? Soft ground needs wide tracks; hard surfaces need narrower, more mobile tracks.
- Transport Weight: Can the undercarriage be broken down into components that your current trucks can haul? I once had to pay an extra $1,500 for a specialized low-boy trailer because the undercarriage was a single unit—something I could have avoided with a different Demag model.
- Component Serviceability: Demag parts for the lower works (undercarriage) can be harder to source than the upper boom systems. Ensure your supplier can actually get drive sprockets and idler wheels, not just the engine parts.
Step 3: Verify the OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts Strategy
This is the step most people forget until it's too late. You are buying a piece of machinery that will require maintenance for 20+ years. You need a strategy for component sourcing before you sign the contract.
Demag offers a full range of service parts, but they are priced at a premium. You have (broadly) three options:
- Full OEM support: Guaranteed Demag quality for all repairs. Higher cost, lower risk.
- Third-party components: Some suppliers (not all) make excellent copycats of Demag parts for things like brakes and motors. Price is lower, but risk of fitment issues is real.
- Hybrid approach: Critical safety components (like brakes, hooks, motors) stay OEM; non-critical wear items (like track pads, filters, bumpers) can be third-party.
Looking back, I should have negotiated a 10-year spares agreement upfront. At the time, the prices for the OEM parts list seemed high, and I assumed the market would provide cheaper alternatives. It has—but the cheap alternatives have a 20% failure rate in my experience. That is a 20% headache rate I pay for every year now.
Checkpoint for Step 3:
Ask the vendor: “Which components are unique to Demag and cannot be substituted without voiding the warranty?” Write the answer into the contract.
Step 4: The Acceptance Test—Watch for the “Pretty” Test
This is the final gate. The crane is installed. The vendor does a test lift. It goes up, it goes down, it moves the load. It looks like it works. That is the “Pretty” test.
Do not accept the crane based on the Pretty test.
You need the 5-Shift Test (or equivalent load cycle test). The crane must complete 5 full shift cycles of your actual production process—not just a test weight—under your supervision. This is where problems appear:
- Soft foot issues (uneven track contact)
- Duty cycle overheating (if the rated capacity isn't matched to a real work cycle)
- Inverter noise causing sensor faults
If you ask for a proper test and the vendor hesitates, consider it a red flag. A Demag crane (or any high-quality Demag overhead crane) should be able to run a 8-hour benchmark. If it can't, you caught a problem before it becomes yours.
Common Mistakes I’ve Made (So You Don't Have To)
Mistake 1: Focusing on the “hook” and ignoring the “foot.”
I spent 70% of my technical review on the winch and the boom. I spent 10% on the undercarriage. The boom was perfect. The undercarriage wasn't wide enough for our soil conditions. The machine sank 2 inches on the first rain-soaked job. Fixing the undercarriage after delivery cost more than the original premium for the wider model would have been.
Mistake 2: Thinking “what is a crane” is a simple question.
It isn't. A “crane” in the context of an overhead rail system is a different animal than a “crane” in the context of a mobile site lift. Make sure everyone is using the same operation definition. I saw a procurement team order a mobile crane when they needed an overhead rail system because they only googled “what is a crane”—it looks like a box with a hook on it, right? Wrong. Immobilizing overhead cranes require different rail requirements.
Mistake 3: Trusting the single source for shipping estimates.
Your Demag crawler crane isn't like ordering "bucket hats" on Amazon. Shipping a 20-ton tracked vehicle costs between $2,000 and $8,000 depending on distance and permits (as of early 2025, at least). Get three transportation quotes before you finalize the crane PO.
Final Note: The Industry Has Changed
What was considered a “standard” crane spec in 2020 is now more varied. Electric drivetrains have changed the distribution of weight on overhead cranes. What was a best practice for a 50-ton Demag model from 2015 may not apply to a 2025 model. The fundamentals of physics haven't changed, but the execution—and the warranty conditions—absolutely have. Use this checklist to update your company's internal procurement guide accordingly. It will save your next buyer a headache.
