Cheap Demag Parts Are the Most Expensive Mistake I Still Almost Make

When a Demag crawler part fails under load, there's a standing engineering team that can tell you exactly why it failed. They have the original material spec and load data. When an aftermarket broker does not even answer the phone after I demonstrated their 'brand new' part had mismatched hardened surface specs on the bearing race, that's the difference. The cost of the authentic part includes the manufacturer's willingness to put their engineering reputation behind it. I've learned to total the hidden costs of cheap parts—the inspection hours, the rework, the downtime, the risk to people—and compare that to the premium. The premium usually wins. Not always. But usually.

At least, that's been my experience in the last six years. So I'll refine my earlier statement: cheap Demag parts are the most expensive mistake you can make, unless you're prepared to reverse-engineer every failure yourself. And if you have time for that, you're not running a crane fleet.

If you take one thing from this, ask the next parts supplier for the full traceability document before they quote you. A direct price comparison without that document is just arithmetic. The real quote is the price of the part plus the probability of a surprise, multiplied by the cost of that surprise. That math changed how I buy. It's the best checklist I have.
