The short answer: start with the parts list and TCO, not the quote
If you are buying Demag parts, a Demag jib crane, or deciding between a reach truck vs forklift, the lowest quote is usually not the lowest cost. In Q4 2025, I compared three quotes for a 1-ton jib crane installation. The cheapest was $2,300 below the next bid. After foundation, anchor bolts, installation, and a required inspection, it was $7,200 more over 24 months. That is the whole game.
Here's the thing: a Demag parts list is not a price list. It is a compatibility document. If your list does not include the serial number, revision level, and critical spare flags, you are basically guessing. And if you are comparing a reach truck to a forklift, you are not really comparing vehicles. You are comparing aisle width, lift height, duty cycle, battery strategy, and how often your operators need to move.

It is a way to remove a bottleneck from a work cell.

One more thing: foundation matters. A jib crane is not a bolt-on. The anchor bolts, concrete thickness, and deflection limits determine the safe capacity. Reach truck vs forklift: the comparison most teams get wrong
It is tempting to think reach truck vs forklift is just about aisle width. A reach truck works in narrow aisles; a forklift works outdoors and on rough surfaces. That is true, but incomplete. The real comparison is travel distance, lift height, load stability, battery handling, and operator training.
Here is how I frame it for our budget:
- Forklift: better for outdoor yards, uneven surfaces, and attachments. Usually lower acquisition cost, higher aisle space cost.
- Reach truck: better for high racking and narrow aisles. Usually higher acquisition cost, lower building space cost.
- Jib crane: better for fixed, repetitive lifts in one cell. Usually lowest operating cost per lift if duty cycle is high.
I get why people go with the cheapest option. Budgets are real. But the hidden costs add up. Battery changes, charging infrastructure, operator certification, aisle reconfiguration, and damage to racking can make a $28,000 reach truck look cheaper or more expensive than a $34,000 forklift over 5 years. Use a TCO spreadsheet, not a sticker price.
And if your search results are showing a crewe tractor, check the use case. A crewe tractor or yard tractor is usually for moving trailers or heavy carts, not for lifting pallets to 20 feet. It is a different asset class. For a crane fly, that is probably an insect. If you meant crane fly as a lifting term, you likely want a hoist, festoon system, or crane remote. No Demag product is called a crane fly.
Boundary conditions: when this advice does not apply
This approach is not for every project. If you need a one-time lift, renting a mobile crane or a forklift is usually cheaper than installing a jib crane. If your facility has less than 2 years left on the lease, a fixed jib crane may not pay back. If you are in a seismic zone or an older building with unknown slab thickness, engineering costs can change the math quickly.
Also, a Demag parts list is only useful if you have the right equipment documentation. If the nameplate is missing or the serial number is unreadable, get a service technician to identify the equipment before you order. That inspection is usually cheaper than returning a wrong part.
Finally, check your local regulations. According to OSHA 1910.179 (osha.gov), overhead and gantry cranes require frequent and periodic inspections. ASME B30.11 and B30.17 provide additional guidance for underhung and overhead cranes. Rules vary by state and country. Do not treat my checklist as a legal compliance document.
