Demag Cranes and Demag Undercarriage Parts: A Procurement Manager's Honest Cost Guide

There's no single "right" answer when it comes to buying Demag cranes or sourcing Demag undercarriage parts.

If you've been in procurement for more than a few quarters, you already know this. But it's worth saying out loud, because so much advice online treats these decisions like they're one-size-fits-all. They're not. The right call depends on your operating environment, your utilization rate, your downtime tolerance, and the size of your budget.

Over the past six years of tracking every equipment invoice in our system, I've analyzed roughly $180,000 in cumulative spending on lifting equipment and crane components. I've negotiated with more vendors than I care to count, made my share of mistakes, and built a cost-tracking spreadsheet that has saved us from repeating them. Here's how I think about these decisions.

The question everyone asks is "What's your best price?" The question they should ask is "What does that price actually include?"

Three Scenarios, Three Different Answers

Before I get into specifics, you need to figure out which situation you're in. There are three common ones:

  • Buying your first Demag crane — new or used
  • Replacing undercarriage parts on equipment you already own
  • Deciding between OEM Demag parts and third-party alternatives

These scenarios have very different cost structures. Mixing them up is how procurement teams end up overpaying in one area and under-budgeting in another.

Scenario A: Buying Your First Demag Crane

If you're purchasing a Demag crane for the first time, the sticker price is the first thing you'll see. It's also the least useful number on the quote.

When I audited our 2023 spending, I found that 22% of our "budget overruns" came from costs that never showed up in the initial vendor proposal. Rigging, transportation, permits, site prep, and operator training all arrived as separate line items after the fact. (Surprise, surprise.)

Demag cranes carry a premium over lesser-known manufacturers. That's not a criticism — the engineering pedigree is real, and the residual value of Demag equipment is well documented. But you need to calculate total cost of ownership, not just the invoice amount.

Before you sign anything, get the following in writing:

  • Delivery, rigging, and site access costs
  • Installation and commissioning fees
  • Operator training (Demag control systems have a learning curve, and you'll pay for that training)
  • The first-year maintenance schedule, with estimated costs
  • Warranty terms that spell out what's covered and what isn't

Why does this matter? Because these items can add 30% to 50% on top of the purchase price. (Which, honestly, feels excessive until you realize it's standard practice across the industry.)

One more thing: don't under-spec your first Demag crane to save money upfront. The cost of upgrading later — both in dollars and in lost productivity — will dwarf whatever you saved on the initial purchase.

Scenario B: Replacing Demag Undercarriage Parts

This is where things get interesting.

Demag undercarriage parts — track components, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and the other heavy stuff that keeps your crawler crane moving — get replaced more often than the crane itself. For many operators, this is the real ongoing cost of owning Demag equipment.

Most buyers focus on per-part pricing and completely miss the actual cost drivers: wear life, installation labor, and downtime.

In Q2 2024, I compared quotes from three vendors for a full undercarriage replacement on a Demag crawler crane. Vendor A quoted $28,500 for OEM parts. Vendor B quoted $19,800 for third-party components. I nearly went with Vendor B until I ran the TCO numbers.

Vendor B's parts had an estimated wear life of roughly 60% of OEM parts, based on our operating data. Installation costs were comparable. But the replacement cycle meant we'd be doing the job again in about 60% of the time. Over a five-year horizon, that's $39,600 in parts — plus an extra installation cycle and additional crane downtime.

Vendor A's $28,500 included everything — and the total worked out to about $2,600 less per year over five years. The third-party option, which looked 30% cheaper upfront, actually cost us 43% more over time.

So glad I ran the numbers before approving that PO. I was one signature away from going with the budget option, which would have cost us significantly more in the long run.

Scenario C: OEM vs. Third-Party Parts

Now for the contrarian take: aftermarket parts aren't always a bad idea. The trick is knowing when the risk is worth the savings.

For bolts, filters, seals, and other consumables, third-party components from a reputable supplier are generally fine. Demag doesn't manufacture every washer and fastener in their tracked machines. They source from a global supply chain just like everyone else, and reputable third-party manufacturers often make perfectly good versions of these components.

But for load-bearing components — track links, final drive parts, frames, anything that affects the structural integrity of the machine — I recommend OEM. The metallurgy and heat-treating specifications matter in ways that you can't see until something fails. (Not that I want you to learn that lesson the way I did.)

We tried a third-party track link once. It failed at 40% of expected service life. The $1,200 redo was inconvenient. The crane downtime? That was expensive. When a crane is down, you're not just paying for parts and labor — you're paying for every idle operator, every delayed project, and every client conversation that starts with "Why isn't this done?"

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

By now you're probably wondering which scenario applies to you. Here's a simple self-assessment:

You're in Scenario A if you're shopping for a first crane or replacing a crane from a different manufacturer. Your focus should be total acquisition cost and getting the right specifications for your application. Don't let a tempting upfront price push you into an undersized machine.

You're in Scenario B if you already own Demag equipment and are planning maintenance or replacement parts. Your focus should be lifecycle cost per operating hour, not cost per part. Build a tracking spreadsheet if you don't have one. I built mine after getting burned on hidden fees twice, and it's saved me more than once.

You're in Scenario C if you're weighing a specific parts decision right now. Your focus should be failure risk and downtime cost. When in doubt, go OEM for load-bearing components. For consumables, third-party is defensible.

This framework isn't Demag-specific. I've applied the same cost-per-hour thinking to plate compactors, paddle attachments, and a dozen other equipment categories. The principle is universal: the cheapest option is only cheap if it performs as well and lasts as long.

The "Fifth Grader" Test

Here's a math question that wouldn't be out of place on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?": Which is the better deal — a $19,800 undercarriage part that lasts 5,000 hours, or a $28,500 part that lasts 8,500 hours?

If you did the cost-per-hour math, you already know the answer: the $28,500 part wins at $3.35 per hour versus $3.96 for the "cheaper" part. You'd be surprised how many procurement professionals get that one wrong because they're looking at the wrong number.

Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), manufacturers have to substantiate their performance claims. But "substantiated" doesn't mean "easy to compare." The burden of doing the full cost analysis still falls on you.

The Bottom Line

Demag cranes and Demag undercarriage parts carry a premium for a reason. Whether that premium is worth paying depends on your situation — your utilization rate, your downtime tolerance, your operating environment, and your long-term plans for the equipment.

What I can tell you after six years of tracking every invoice: I've never regretted doing the full TCO analysis before a purchase. I have regretted skipping it. Twice.

Your situation is yours. Run the numbers. And if a vendor won't give you enough information to run them properly, that's an answer in itself.
