Demag Spare Parts: What a Cost Controller Actually Buys for Tadano Demag Cranes

There is no honest way to start this article without saying the thing everybody hates: the right Demag spare parts strategy depends on your crane, your usage, and the specific part. That sounds like a consultant dodging a question. It isn't. After 7 years of buying crane components for a 160-person steel fabrication plant, I've learned that anyone who gives you a blanket rule—always OEM, never OEM—probably hasn't opened many invoices.

My name doesn't matter. What matters is that I've managed about $220,000 a year in crane maintenance spend, documented every order in our cost tracking system, and made enough mistakes to know which ones are expensive.

So here's my mental model. I split buying decisions into three situations. Not by part category, by operating context.

  • A production-critical overhead or gantry crane that runs more than 8 hours a day.
  • An older Tadano Demag crane where the official parts route is slow or pricey.
  • A light-duty or standby crane that isn't part of the daily bottleneck.

And there's a special category: the AC compressor. That one deserves its own conversation.

Start with the crane's duty class, not the part vendor's promise

Before I buy anything, I look at the crane's classification plate. The relevant standard is ISO 4301, which gives a crane a duty class from M1 to M8. FEM 9.511 does something similar under the older European naming system. The class tells you how much work the crane is designed to handle. If your crane is M6 and someone offers you a part rated for M3, the difference in purchase price is the smallest part of the problem.

Ask the supplier what classification their part is designed for. If they say 'it's a direct replacement, no matter what,' walk away. Fits and works are not synonyms.

Scenario 1: Production-critical overhead cranes and gantry cranes

If the crane is carrying the plant's output, your priority is not parts price. It's uptime. On a crane that runs 10 hours a day, I buy genuine Demag parts for anything in the load path—hooks, gears, hoist drums, brake assemblies. Not because Demag is perfect. Because the worst-case scenario is too expensive.

I learned this in my first year. I made the classic rookie mistake: assumed 'standard' meant the same thing to every supplier. I approved a budget replacement rope drum for a Demag hoist. The mounting holes lined up. The drum diameter was 3 mm under spec. It looked fine. It was not fine. The wire rope angle changed and we had a birdcaging failure on a night shift. The part saved about $200. A lesson learned the hard way—after $1,800 in unplanned downtime.

On production-critical cranes, I also pay attention to the efficiency side. Demag's aftermarket portal and remote service have improved since the Tadano acquisition. If you can pull the part diagram by serial number in 30 seconds, you stop guessing. Why does this matter? Because an extra day of downtime costs more than any part on that crane.

Scenario 2: Older Tadano Demag cranes and the AC compressor exception

Now a different situation. You own an older mobile crane—maybe one of the pre-Tadano Demag units, or a model that's gone through the rebrand. Official support still exists. For less common models, some components are easier to source through independent specialists. The calculus shifts.

For anything safety-critical or structural, I still lean genuine. But for auxiliary systems, I've started treating remanufactured parts as a real option. The perfect example is the cab's AC compressor.

If you've ever had the AC compressor go out on a Tadano Demag crane in July, you know it's not a one-hour job. It affects operator alertness, but it doesn't lift anything. So I don't automatically order the OEM unit. I check exchange programs from reputable shops that can provide a warranty and a test report. A remanufactured AC compressor usually costs about half of the genuine part, and for this non-load-bearing role, the performance difference is often zero.

The trap is when 'remanufactured' actually means 'painted aftermarket junk from an auction site.' That's not the same thing. Get the documentation. If they can't show you the bearing and seal replacement record, move on.

Last year, a brake coil on a critical crane failed with 2 hours before shift end. Normally I would wait for the genuine Demag coil and pay freight. There was no time. I called a local motor shop, had them rebuild the coil overnight. It worked. I still don't love that decision, but with a delivery due the next morning, I did the best I could with available information. The lesson wasn't 'never remanufacture.' It was 'plan better so you aren't forced into that choice.'

Scenario 3: Light-duty and standby equipment

The opposite end of the spectrum: a 5-ton gantry crane that gets used once a month, or a workshop jib crane that sits idle for weeks. Here, a fully genuine Demag part is often overkill. A third-party part from a supplier who can provide material certs and a test certificate is fine. I've saved thousands this way. Not ideal, but workable. Actually more than workable—it's the right economic call.

One condition: verify before you install. Ask for a dimensional report, material certificate, and load test certificate. If you get a shrug, leave. 'Cheap' only looks good in the quote, not in the failure report.

I built a simple cost calculator after getting burned on hidden fees twice. It forces me to compare the total cost: base price, freight, certifications, rush fees, and likely service life. One supplier quoted $720 for an aftermarket brake part. Another quoted $1,400 for the genuine Demag part. The cheap one added $180 freight, $120 for a 'documentation fee,' and no delivery guarantee. Total: $1,020. The genuine price included everything. That's basically a 30% difference hidden in the fine print.

How to know which situation you're in

  1. What is the crane's ISO 4301 duty class? If you don't know, find the manual before you buy anything else.
  2. How many hours does it actually run per week? Use an hour meter, not your memory.
  3. What happens if the crane fails? Lost production and penalty clauses, or just a rescheduled task?
  4. Is the part in the load path? Hooks, drums, brakes, gears: yes. AC compressor, lights, seat: no.
  5. Will anyone inspect it after installation? If no, lean toward genuine.

That's the whole model. No universal answer. But when you know the crane's duty class, what the part actually does, and what downtime costs, the decision becomes boring. Boring is good. Boring means you're buying the right part, not the urgent one.

One last thing: the crane fly vs mosquito search

It doesn't lift anything, it doesn't need Demag spare parts, and it has never been classified under ISO 4301. This article is about metal cranes.
