Demag AC100 vs. Crawler Systems: Which Mobile Crane Actually Fits Your Job?

The Demag AC100 is a road‑legal all‑terrain. You drive it to the site, boom up, outriggers down, and you’re lifting within an hour. The crawler system? You need low‑bed trailers, sometimes two or three loads. Then assembly — tracks, counterweights, boom sections — could take a full day. Maybe two.

Example from my records: In April 2023, we had a two‑day shutdown at a chemical plant. AC100 arrived at 6 AM, lifted reactors by 10 AM, done by 4 PM. Crawler option? Estimated setup time alone would have blown the window. (We didn't even quote it.)

  • Your lifts are under 150 tons and setup speed is critical.
  • You want to avoid extra transport crew costs.

Buy a Demag crawler system if:

  • Your work is on soft ground (farms, mud, sand) for extended periods.
  • You need heavy lifts (300+ tons) and can justify the setup time.
  • You have a dedicated site for 6+ months — the lower ownership cost pays off.

What about a telehandler? That’s a whole different beast. Telehandlers (like a JCB or Genie) are for material handling — lifting pallets, placing steel, etc. They are not cranes. If you’re moving loads under 10 tons and need a fork or bucket, a telehandler is cheaper, faster, and often enough. But for rigging and heavy lifts, don’t even think about it. (I’ve seen companies try. It ended badly.)

Finally, a blunt truth: My experience is limited to Demag equipment and mid‑large construction. If you’re in specialty sectors like mining or offshore, the trade‑offs shift. I can’t speak to those. But for most general contractors and industrial buyers, the AC100 is the workhorse — unless you live in mud.
