Demag Crane Hire in Crewe: A 7-Point Buyers Checklist (and the Spares Question Most People Get Wrong)

I didn't start with a checklist. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I trusted supplier reputations, compared day rates, and signed wherever the numbers looked best. Everything I'd read about plant hire said the same thing: buy on rate, keep relationships loose. In practice, I found the opposite—the cheapest day rate usually came with slower spare parts cover and looser service commitments, and that's where the money actually went. The third hire of that year was the turning point. The 12-point checklist I built after that mistake has saved us an estimated £18,000 in avoided rework and downtime since.

I've had a supplier quote "a Demag, 50-tonne class" when the site actually needed 55 tonnes at a radius the smaller unit couldn't reach. Check capacity against the lift plan, not against the sales summary. It's a five-minute question that prevents a week of site disruption.

2. Ask where the spare parts come from

This is the one most buyers miss. Everyone compares day rates and lift capacities. Very few ask what happens when something fails—and where the replacement parts come from. It's the demag crane spares question, and it deserves its own section.

Genuine Demag crane spares are usually available through the manufacturer's network, but lead times vary depending on whether the part is stocked in the UK or shipped from Germany. Some hire companies keep a stock of wear items like electric motors, brakes, and hydraulic seals. Others order per breakdown and hope you don't mind waiting.

Before you sign, ask:

  • Do you stock Demag spares locally, or order them per breakdown?
  • Are replacements genuine Demag parts or compatible alternatives?
  • What's the typical lead time for the parts most likely to fail on this model?

3. Check operator training and certification records

For anything beyond a straightforward lift, ask about the Appointed Person and the lift plan. The operator drives the machine; someone else needs to have planned the lift.

4. Review the LOLER thorough examination report

In the UK, lifting equipment sits under LOLER—the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. The crane should have a current thorough examination report from a competent person, normally dated within the last 6 or 12 months depending on the equipment and its use. Ask for it before delivery, not when the crane is parked at your gate.

This is the prevention-over-cure part of my whole approach. Five minutes reading a report beats five days arguing about a machine that isn't legally fit for the job.

5. Plan the approach route before delivery day

Crewe is a town of industrial estates and older streets that weren't designed for 40-tonne mobile cranes. We once had a delivery delayed by most of a day because the transporter couldn't take the route we'd assumed was fine.

It's easy to forget the same roads handle a lot of agricultural traffic. Crewe sits in the middle of Cheshire farmland, so in spring and harvest the tractors and trailers are a constant presence. That sounds obvious written down, but nobody factors it into a delivery window until they're stuck behind one. Check bridge weights, confirm the low-loader can physically reach the site, and ask the supplier what route survey they've done.

6. Get the breakdown response terms written down

Hire agreements are easy to sign when everything's working. The real test is the machine failing. Ask for:

  • A guaranteed response time for breakdowns
  • Whether a replacement unit is provided, and how quickly
  • Who carries the cost of idle site time

Two years ago, a Demag unit failed while we were lifting garbage truck bodies out of the council depot for maintenance. The supplier said "we'll send someone" and then went quiet for three days. Our current contract template includes a written response-time clause and a replacement guarantee, because of that job.

7. Photograph the unit on arrival

When the crane turns up, spend ten minutes walking around it with your phone. Photograph all four sides, the hooks and blocks, the outriggers, the load chart plate, and the hour meter. Compare the logbook against the machine's actual hours.

Granted, this feels bureaucratic when you're hiring from a well-known brand. It's also the cheapest insurance you'll get all year. I've used those photos twice to avoid being billed for pre-existing damage, and once to prove the service log didn't match the machine's condition.

Common mistakes I watch for now

  • Choosing on day rate alone. The cheapest quote usually comes with thinner spare parts cover and slower response. You find out exactly how thin at the worst possible moment.
  • Letting renewal terms drift. Day rates creep up between hires. Get the renewal quote in writing at least 30 days before the current agreement expires.
  • Accepting "compatible parts" for safety-critical components. Aftermarket parts are sometimes perfectly good. But for critical lifting components, I want the provenance in writing.
