Demag Cranes AG vs. Generic Parts: An Emergency Buyer's Guide for 2025

The comparison that actually matters when a Demag crane is down

I'm the person you call at 4 p.m. on a Friday when a Demag crane stops working. My job is to get you running again without blowing your budget. Over the past six years, I've coordinated about 200 rush repairs for manufacturing plants, warehouses, and waste-transfer stations—maybe 180, I'd have to check the log. When a crane goes down, the decision that comes up again and again is this: genuine Demag Cranes AG parts or generic aftermarket parts?

This is the comparison I use when I triage a down crane. It's not a warm introduction. It's a checklist.

Before the comparison, one historical note. Demag Cranes AG has been through a few ownership changes, and the names confuse people. When Tadano acquired Demag mobile cranes from Terex in 2019, the move changed how spare parts move through some channels. That matters for lead times. As of January 2025, Demag's official product line still covers overhead cranes, gantry cranes, and crane components.

Dimension 1: Lead time — 'fast' means something else when a line is stopped

The first question is how quickly can I get the part. In my experience, generic parts often seem faster because a local supplier has one on the shelf. But 'on the shelf' isn't the same as 'ready to install.'

In March 2024, a client called at 3 p.m. about a motor failure on a 10-ton gantry crane. The local aftermarket supplier had a motor in stock, about 20% cheaper than the Demag equivalent, and promised next-day delivery. The Demag distributor needed two days and a $750 rush fee. We went with the Demag motor because that crane was on a food-processing line with a $50,000 penalty if the line stopped for more than 24 hours. The generic motor might have worked. But 'might' isn't a plan.

Generic parts can be the right choice when you have an engineer who can verify the replacement. I'd never say otherwise. But I've seen too many 'next-day' parts arrive with the wrong mounting flange. If I remember correctly, that has happened at least three times in the last two years.

Dimension 2: Compatibility — fit is not the same as match

Bolt patterns are easy. Duty cycles are not. A generic motor might fit perfectly but have a different insulation class or thermal protection. It will run—until it trips at the wrong moment.

A waste-transfer station once asked me to source a hoist motor for a crane they use to load bins into a garbage truck. The aftermarket motor fit, but it wasn't rated for the 90 starts per hour that lift handles. It lasted three weeks. The Demag unit cost more, but it was designed for that cycle. I'm not a motor engineer, so I can't get into the winding temperature math. What I can tell you from the maintenance side is that the thermal trip logs don't lie.

Last month, I made a client read the serial number back to me twice. We were one digit away from ordering a motor for the wrong gantry crane. That's the kind of mistake that turns a routine repair into a $15,000 mess.

Dimension 3: Total cost and the small-order bias

Here's where I get a little contrarian. Conventional wisdom says aftermarket parts are cheaper because you're only paying for the part. In practice, I've found that the real cost comparison needs to include the second service visit, the missed pickup, the overtime, and the paperwork. That's where the 'savings' goes.

Also, small orders matter. I have no patience for the vendor who won't return a phone call for a $200 part. When I was starting out, the suppliers who took my small orders seriously are the ones I still call for $20,000 replacements. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential. A customer with a $400 gantry crane repair might be the same person who buys a $40,000 Demag Cranes AG overhead crane next year.

Dimension 4: Documentation and accountability

Anyone can sell you a block of steel with holes. Not everyone can give you a load test certificate, a serial number, and a warranty that a safety auditor will accept. In regulated warehouses, missing paperwork can shut down a crane faster than the failure itself.

Genuine Demag parts come with traceability. Aftermarket parts often don't. I've had clients who bought a perfectly good-looking hoist for a gantry crane and then couldn't get the machine commissioned because the certificate wasn't accepted. That's not a hypothetical.

So which option should you choose?

Use genuine Demag parts when the crane is critical, the load path is over people, the cycle rate is high, or the facility needs documentation. Use a verified aftermarket alternative when a qualified engineer confirms compatibility, the duty cycle is light, and you have room for risk.

And if you're actually comparing a new Demag Cranes AG overhead crane to a gantry crane for a workshop: gantry cranes are simpler to install, and a good gantry crane can serve you well for years. Overhead cranes save floor space and handle higher duty cycles. I'd rather see a small business buy a solid gantry crane and spend the difference on training than stretch a cheap overhead crane beyond its limits.

My experience is based on repair jobs in the Northeast. If you're running a crane on a remote site, your lead times will be different. The rule stays the same: choose the option you can prove, not just the option you can buy.
