Demag Cranes and Components in Texas: 7 Years of Procurement Mistakes, One Checklist

That quote came from the project manager, and he wasn't wrong. Looking back, I should have rented for that first project instead of purchasing. At the time, buying felt like the smart long-term move. It wasn't—at least not until our team understood what a 600-ton crawler actually asks of an organization. By 2020, I'd documented 21 of my own procurement errors and turned them into a pre-purchase checklist that has since caught 47 potential mistakes across 200+ orders in the past 18 months. This article is the condensed version of that record.

The capacity trap

Capacity isn't irrelevant. It's table stakes. The question—"can this crane lift the load at the radius I need?"—has to be answered before anything else. But our industry treats that single number as the only number, and you can see it in the search queries landing on our site.

"Demag 800 ton crane" is one of the most common. I get the appeal. The CC 8800-1 is a genuine feat of engineering, with a maximum capacity of 800 metric tons at a specific boom length and counterweight configuration—not a blanket rating you can apply to any project. And since OSHA's Cranes and Derricks standard (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC) tightened requirements, load charts have become more conservative. The gap between brochure numbers and real-world working capacity is wider than most first-time buyers assume.

What the brochure also doesn't tell you: an 800-ton crawler can take two to three weeks to assemble on site. It needs ground engineering to handle its footprint. It needs space for counterweight configuration. And every relocation starts that process over. Here's the counterintuitive part—a crane that's too big for the job is often worse than one that's slightly too small. It needs stronger ground support, wider access roads, more permits, and a bigger crew. Every one of those constraints adds time, and time is where the budget disappears.

There's a historical angle here. The "bigger is better" assumption comes from a period when heavy modular lifts genuinely required 600-ton-plus machines because modules were built that way. That's changed. Modular construction methods have evolved; engineered lifting frames now let smaller cranes handle loads that would've required an 800-ton a decade ago. The fundamentals of crane selection haven't changed—match the machine to the lift, the site, and the schedule. But the execution has transformed. What was best practice in 2015 may not apply in 2025.

The question to ask instead of "how much can it lift?" is: "what's the heaviest thing I'm contractually committed to lift in the next 12 months?" That answer, not the spec sheet, should drive your capacity decision.

What the Texas search data tells me

A decade ago, most Demag buyers found us through industry directories or referrals. Today, they find us through Google—which is a much stranger place. The word "crusher," for instance, attracts searches for the Skullcandy Crusher EVO headphones, a product with zero overlap with our business beyond sharing a name with the crushing equipment we sell. Understandable on the surface, but a crane and a tractor have radically different data needs.

That mix of search traffic isn't just a nuisance—it's a reflection of how much the buyer journey has changed. In 2018, the industry still ran on relationships and phone calls. Today, the first touchpoint is often a search engine, and your terminology determines whether you land at a serious equipment supplier or a headphones review. The most frustrating part: buying teams still submit requests with language imprecise enough to produce genuinely ambiguous results. You'd think the stakes would encourage precision. They don't, always.

The lesson I repeat to our own team and to buyers: precise terminology is worth real money. "I need a 250-ton crawler crane with 130 feet of main boom for a refinery turnaround in Baytown" gets you to a useful answer in minutes. "I need a big crane, maybe 800 tons" gets you to a conversation that costs everyone time. If you don't know the exact terminology, describe the job—the weight, the radius, the site—and let someone experienced translate it.

The checklist

After the 2017 disaster, I built a list, and I don't approve a Demag crane or component purchase without checking it:

  • The signed-contract test. What's the heaviest lift actually in your signed pipeline, not your proposal backlog? If the number is 300 tons, you don't need to be looking at 800-ton machines.
  • The access test. Can transport trucks reach the site? Can the ground support the assembled crane and its counterweight? I've seen a $2 million crane arrive at a site that couldn't support its own counterweight trailer—three days of ground stabilization before assembly could start.
  • The service radius test. Where is the nearest service depot, and how quickly can a technician be on site? A call center isn't an answer. In Texas, this is usually manageable. Outside Texas, make it your first question.
  • The relocation test. What do assembly and disassembly cost each time the crane moves? For a large crawler, commonly 10–15% of the purchase price per move. If that number changes your project economics, you're buying the wrong class of crane.

The list has caught errors on everything from a $4,800 parts order to a $2.3 million crane package. It isn't complicated. It's just earlier than most of us are trained to make decisions.

When to ignore this advice

I've been clear about my bias: crawler cranes, Texas projects. There are situations where you should push back on almost everything I've written.

First, if you're a specialized heavy-lift contractor with a steady stream of modular or power plant work, the 800-ton class is not overkill. It's your production machinery. The crew, the ground engineering, the assembly discipline—it's all part of your operating model, and the relocation costs I warned about are just line items in your standard pricing.

Second, if you're renting a crane for one specific lift, ignore the ownership math. Rental rates are a different equation. If an 800-ton rental completes a job in a day that a 400-ton would stretch across a week, rent the bigger machine. Just confirm the site can physically handle it before you book.

Third, outside the Gulf Coast region, the service infrastructure picture changes significantly. Demag's North American footprint is strong but not uniform. In remote areas, the service radius test belongs at the top of your list, not the bottom.

I've deliberately left prices out of this article. Demag crane pricing varies too much with configuration, condition, and included components to be useful as a single number (verify current rates with a certified dealer). But the mistakes I've documented are more expensive than any crane I've ever quoted.
