The Demag Parts Mistake I Made 15 Times (So You Don't Have To)

I've been handling Demag equipment service and spare parts orders for about twelve years. I've personally made—and, to my credit, carefully documented—15 significant parts-ordering mistakes. If I add up wasted components, freight, restocking, and the labor spent fitting parts that didn't fit, the total comes to roughly $46,000 of other people's money. That number changes how you think.

These mistakes weren't random. They all came from the same assumption: that finding a Demag part is a lookup job. Type in the model, click order, and move on. That assumption has cost me more than any single bad part ever did.

Some questions that reach my inbox honestly sound like “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” questions. “Which Demag part do I need?” It sounds simple. It's not. Let me explain what I mean.

The Surface Problem: Right Part, Wrong Machine

When a parts-related failure comes to me, it usually has one of three stories attached. The part arrived but did not fit. The part fit but wore out in weeks instead of years. Or the compatible replacement was compatible with everything except the actual machine in the building.

The common response is to blame the supplier, or the catalogue. Sometimes that's fair. More often, the catalogue was right and the machine didn't match the catalogue.

I learned that lesson in my first year. In 2017, I ordered a set of travel wheels for the end carriage of an older Demag overhead crane. I checked the crane type, found the wheel part number in the manufacturer's documentation, and placed the order. Everything was correct—except the wheels that arrived had a tread 12 millimetres narrower than the wheels we'd removed. Twelve millimetres. On a lifting component, that was not a minor difference; it would have changed how the wheel sat on the rail. We couldn't use them.

That mistake cost $1,450 in parts and five extra days with the crane out of service. The frustrating part? Nobody made an obvious error. I ordered the standard wheel for that crane type. What I didn't know was that the crane had been modified years earlier with a different wheel profile to suit its runway rail. The catalogue couldn't see that. The machine could, if I had bothered to measure it first.

The type plate tells you what the machine was when it left the factory. It doesn't tell you what the machine has become after decades of repairs and well-intentioned improvements.

What's Actually Going On: Three Layers Nobody Tells You About

I spent years treating these incidents as separate, unlucky events. After the third expensive rejection in Q1 2024, I sat down and mapped every mistake I had documented. The same three layers kept appearing underneath nearly all of them.

Layer One: The History of Demag Cranes AG Is Also a Parts History

Demag Cranes AG is a name that still appears in older manuals and on older nameplates. But the engineering behind that name spans many decades and several corporate generations. A Demag hoist built in the 1970s and a Demag hoist built in the 2000s can share a type name and almost no interchangeable parts.

It doesn't stop at hoists. Bridge cranes, crawler cranes, backhoes, and their drives all went through design generations. Unless you're working from the serial number and the exact build variant—not just the model name—you're guessing. And if you're guessing, the supplier can't save you from the mistake you made before you even called them.

Layer Two: Components Cross Brand Boundaries

Here's the scenario that surprises people: the Demag name is not always on the outside of the machine. Demag supplied motors, hoists, travel drives, and undercarriage components to other equipment builders for decades. So you'll find genuine Demag parts inside scrapers, industrial tractors, and other machines carrying completely different brands.

This is where search terms lead people astray. I worked with a customer in Crewe who needed parts for what they called their “crewe tractor.” Searching that phrase got them nowhere, because the failing part was not a tractor part at all—it was a Demag travel drive fitted to the machine's handling attachment. The outside brand didn't matter. The Demag serial plate did.

And it cuts the other way too. Search for “Demag backhoe spare parts” and you'll find dozens of suppliers happy to take an order. But unless you know which Demag excavator generation you have, and which component inside it is actually failing, a listing that says “fits Demag” is not information. It's a guess with a price tag.

Layer Three: A Seller Who Asks No Questions Is a Warning Sign

Here's the thing I tell every new technician: if a supplier can sell you a crane part without asking for a serial number, a voltage, or a duty cycle, you're not buying expertise—you're buying a part number. The best suppliers ask questions because they know the cost of getting it wrong is paid on your workshop floor, not in their warehouse.

When I made my most expensive mistake in 2022, nobody asked me anything. I didn't think of that as a problem. I should have.

What Those Mistakes Really Cost

In September 2022, I needed a replacement motor for a Demag hoist in a fabrication shop. I found a motor with the same frame size, power, and mounting. It was about $600 cheaper than the duty-rated motor listed for that hoist. It ran for six weeks and then started tripping on thermal overload.

Why? The hoist was doing frequent lifts all day, and the cheaper motor was not rated for that duty cycle. The second replacement—the correct one—plus freight and labor added about $3,200 to the original bill. So we didn't save $600. We spent $3,200 to learn something we already knew.

On lifting equipment, the bill isn't only money. In a workshop, a crane failure can stop production, but it can also put people in a position no maintenance budget should create. That's why a 12-millimetre wheel difference is not a small detail. It's a rejection.

Seeing the same types of orders with and without a verification step finally made me realize that the error rate was never about competence. It was about process. Since our pre-order checklist went in, our team has caught 47 potential errors in about a year. Some were as small as the wrong voltage on a coil. Some were exactly the kind of variant mismatch I'd been making since 2017.

The Fix Is Boring—and That's the Point

Real talk: none of this is advanced engineering. It's method. The checklist we use now has five points:

  1. Start from the machine's type plate and serial number—not from memory and not from a previous order.
  2. Measure the actual part that came off. If it's electrical, note voltages and ratings. If it's mechanical, take dimensions and photos.
  3. Ask about the machine's history. Has this component been changed before? When? By whom?
  4. Confirm the variant with the supplier before you pay. Give them the serial number and let them check it.
  5. If the supplier doesn't ask any questions in return, treat the quote as unverified.

This is not a revolutionary list. It's the list I wish someone had handed me in 2017. If you work with Demag machines—cranes, excavators, or any equipment with Demag drives inside—you don't need to become a Demag historian. You do need to treat part identification as a conversation, not a keyword search.

A Final Honest Note

I'm writing this from twelve years of hands-on work, mostly with Demag equipment in European and North American facilities. The general principles are consistent; the specific details are not. This was accurate as of early 2025, and product ranges and corporate structures change faster than most catalogues get updated. Always verify the part against your machine's serial number before ordering. If you're not sure who to ask, ask the manufacturer or their authorized service channel.
